about
As an artist and illustrator I enjoy working on commissioned portraits, developing my own art, as well illustrating for clients with experience in book publishing, textile design and print. My portraits are ink drawings and watercolour which vary in size depending on individual preferences. I use various mediums in my illustration work, most often ink, pencil and watercolour.
My work as a portrait artist seeks to capture the energy of the moment and what it means to be human. An ode to the joy, humility, and quirks that define us, my interest lies in capturing aspects of ones personality, the tenderness of our close relationships and the nostalgia of times past. Using a form of artistic reportage, I translate these snapshots into playful yet thoughtful compositions experimenting with layering of materials, repetition, carefully considered perspectives and spontaneous mark-making to evoke movement and emotion. Often with commissions I don’t personally know the person but having a good yarn and hearing stories helps me make a connection. The clues are there to help me figure it all out!
When I’m drawing away, my hands ache and the adrenaline pumps, followed by a sense of calm when the paint goes on. It’s a good feeling when it all comes together!
